Is Sam Bradford worth the trade?

The initial reaction to the Nick Foles-for-Sam Bradford trade, announced early in free agency, was overwhelmingly negative--probably because the Eagles gave up draft picks as well as Nick Foles. I must admit that my initial reaction to acquiring the injury-prone QB wasn't too exuberant either!

Philadelphia, as many fans know by now, traded starting QB Nick Foles, a fourth-round draft pick in 2015, and a second-round pick in 2016 to the St. Louis Rams in exchange for starting QB Sam Bradford and the Rams' fifth-round pick in 2015.

As a hedge against injury, the Eagles will receive only a fourth-round pick in 2016 if Bradford starts less than 8 games, and a third-round pick in 2016 if Bradford is re-injured and doesn't play at all (according to multiple reports).

But time will tell how Bradford does in Philadelphia. Chip Kelly obviously thinks Bradford is worth giving up quite a haul. So, by all appearances (including Chip's own press conference the day after the trade was announced), Mariota is off the table--and that's probably not a bad thing.

Assuming Bradford remains healthy, he can do very well. As seen in the video below, he was remarkably accurate, and stood tall to deliver the football on numerous occasions while the pocket collapsed around him. Bradford also suffered from numerous drops: as is well-documented, Bradford did not have a good receiving corps during his time in St. Louis.

See for yourself:

Expect Chip to acquire another quality wide receiver, either through the draft or through free agency, to give Bradford another good target. If not, and he's stuck throwing to Riley Cooper on a regular basis, expect Bradford to perform about the same as he did for the Rams. And that would be a disservice to Philly's newest QB...
